Stop calling it “the cloud”

It's someone else's computer, and they've got opinions about your architecture.

Placeholder rant. Replace it with your own.

“The cloud” makes it sound weightless, as if your workload floats somewhere soft. It doesn’t. It runs in a building, on a rack, on hardware with a failure rate, and the people who own that hardware have made a lot of choices on your behalf.

Name the machine

Once you call it what it is, you start asking the right questions: which region, which failure domain, and what happens when it goes away.
